Why iT'S The Greatest News

A Story of Love, Sacrifice, and Redemption

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)

If someone asked you, “What is the Gospel?”—the Good News—what would you say?

Many passages in Scripture explain it beautifully, but this single verse in 2 Corinthians 5:21 may be the clearest and most breathtaking summary. It captures the heart of the Gospel in one profound sentence:

Jesus took our sin.
We receive His righteousness.

This is often called The Great Exchange—the most extraordinary trade in all of history.

It Was for Us

Introduction – The Problem We All Share

Let’s begin with something we all know deep within our hearts:

We’ve all done wrong.
We’ve lied.
We’ve hurt others.
We’ve been selfish.
We’ve lived as if the world revolves around us.

The Bible calls this sin—not just a mistake, but a deep, heart-level rebellion against God’s way.

And here’s the problem: sin is not a small smudge on our moral record—it’s a barrier. A wall separating us from the God who created us. Scripture tells us that the consequence of sin is separation from God—spiritual death.

The One Who Had No Sin

But this is where the story turns.

Paul writes: “God made him who had no sin…”—referring to Jesus.

Jesus lived a perfect life—completely without wrongdoing. He didn’t just avoid sinful actions; His heart, motives, intentions, and desires were pure. He was flawless in every way.

“To Be Sin for Us” – The Great Exchange

Here’s the staggering truth: God made Jesus “to be sin for us.”

This doesn’t mean Jesus became a sinner. It means God treated Him as if He were guilty of every sin ever committed—yours, mine, and the entire world’s.

On the cross, Jesus absorbed the full judgment our sins deserved.
He was punished so we could be forgiven.

God didn’t rescue us because He needed us.
He wasn’t lonely.
He lacked nothing.

Yet He chose to move toward us—for our sake.

He acted out of love that was unprovoked, undeserved, and unconditional.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

If you ever question whether God loves you, don’t look at your circumstances.
Look at the cross.

The Exchange No One Deserved

Jesus never sinned—
Not once.
Not even in thought.

And yet He was treated as if He had committed every sin ever done by humanity.

He was not made sinful—He was made sin.

He became the sin-bearer, carrying every lie, every lustful thought, every hateful word, every prideful attitude.
He bore all of it.

“The Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
Isaiah 53:6

When Jesus cried, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?”
it was not poetic metaphor—it was the agony of taking on our sin.

He didn’t die for “sin in general.”
He died for your sin — and mine.

The Sinless for the Sinful

Only someone sinless could take our place.
Only Jesus qualifies.

“He was tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin.”
Hebrews 4:15

The Lamb had to be spotless.
The sinless One stood in place of the sinful ones.

That is grace—
We deserved judgment, but the innocent took the penalty so the guilty could walk free.

Imagine a person who has never broken the law willingly serving a life sentence so a guilty prisoner can go free—
and not only be freed, but also be given a clean legal record and adopted into the judge’s own family.
That’s the heart of this verse.

More Than Forgiveness—Righteousness

Jesus didn’t just erase our guilt.
He clothed us in His righteousness.

When God looks at someone who trusts Christ, He sees the righteousness of Jesus covering them. This isn’t:

“Try harder and maybe God will accept you.”

It’s:

“Jesus already accomplished what you never could—now receive it.”

This is justification—God declaring us righteous, not because of anything we’ve done, but entirely because of what Jesus has done.

“…faith is counted as righteousness.”
Romans 4:5

It’s as if our spiritual account was billions in debt—
and Jesus not only paid the full amount,
He credited His entire fortune to us.

If you’ve ever wondered whether God could forgive you, this verse shouts yes.

If you’ve ever felt you had to earn your way back to God, this verse whispers you can’t—and you don’t have to.

Christianity is not good advice for self-improvement;
it is good news about a rescue already accomplished.

How Do We Receive This?

We receive it by being in Christ—through faith and repentance.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”
Galatians 2:20

To be “in Him” means:

  • We stop trusting in our own goodness.
    • We rest in His finished work.
    • We are no longer defined by our failures, but by His faithfulness.

The Great Exchange is a gift—
and a gift must be received.

We receive it by trusting Jesus—confessing our sin, believing He took our place, and surrendering our lives to Him.

When we do:

  • our past is forgiven,
    • our present is transformed,
    • and our future is secured with God.

A Personal Invitation

What will you do with this message?

If you are a believer:

Rejoice—you stand righteous in God’s eyes.
Rest—the work is finished.
Respond—share this good news with others.

If you’re not yet a believer:

The invitation is open.
Jesus bore your sin so you could be made righteous.

Will you turn from your sin and put your trust in Him?

“To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
John 1:12

What’s keeping you from believing in Jesus?

Call out to Him. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you.
Acknowledge your need for a Savior—someone who can cleanse your sin—and place your trust in Jesus.

He desires an intimate relationship with you.
He is not distant.
He is not unreachable.
He is waiting.

If you have questions, reach out to me or another Christian you trust. You don’t have to walk this journey alone. We would be honored to help you take your next step toward knowing Jesus.

I Once Had Doubts and Unbelief

I used to wonder if God and Jesus were even real. I didn’t know what to believe.
But once I experienced His love and mercy firsthand, I could no longer deny Him.

He is the most wonderful person I have ever met.
And I long for others to know Him as I do, because I know what it feels like to live:

  • without peace
    • without joy
    • without hope
    • without purpose

But after encountering Jesus, everything changed.
Now I live with peace, joy, hope, and purpose.

I feel compelled to share Him with as many people as possible, and I pray that those who hear this message encounter Him and find Him real.

Conclusion & Invitation

The Great Exchange is more than theology—

He offers you His righteousness.

Will you take that step today and place your trust in Him?

Closing Prayer

“Father, we thank You for the Great Exchange—that Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God. For those who already believe, strengthen their faith, deepen their gratitude, and ignite their hearts to share the Gospel. For those who do not yet know You, draw them to Yourself today. Let them see the cross not as a distant story but as a personal invitation of love and mercy. We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.”

There is nothing greater than knowing Him.
Jesus truly is the greatest news ever.
Please ask Him to become your Savior today—
you will never regret it.
