God’s Theme Song for Us: “10,000 Reasons” by Matt Redman
Inspired by Psalm 103

Before our mission trip to Asia—just a group of 20 ordinary people ready to say yes to an extraordinary God—He made something beautifully clear: He had a special song for us. A song that would become the heartbeat of our journey and a continual reminder of His presence.

That song was “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)” by Matt Redman, inspired by Psalm 103.

How It All Began

As we prepared for the trip, the missionary in Asia asked if someone in our group knew how to play a guitar so we could worship together during our travels in Asia, using a guitar he would be bringing. He had one request: that all songs center on glorifying God the Father and Jesus.

Though I wasn’t entirely confident playing guitar in public, I knew how—and I felt prompted to volunteer. I was asked to pray about what songs to bring.

Over the next several weeks, I prayerfully selected a list of worship songs. But one song stood out above all the rest. 10,000 Reasons kept rising to the surface. The Holy Spirit gently and persistently impressed it on my heart. I told my wife and daughter (who would also be going on the trip), “I really believe this is our theme song.”

God Confirmed It—Again and Again

Just days before we left, our church held a commissioning service for our team during the Sunday morning service. Right before we were commissioned, the worship leader—completely unaware of our song choice—began playing 10,000 Reasons. My wife and daughter looked over at me with big smiles. We all knew: this was no coincidence. God was confirming His choice.

In Asia, we sang 10,000 Reasons almost every day. Whether during group worship or on our five-day trek through remote villages, I’d often hear teammates humming or softly singing it. The song became our anchor—reminding us of God’s faithfulness and stirring our hearts to worship in every circumstance.

One especially touching moment came when we asked a local boy—whom the missionary believed God was raising up for a powerful purpose—what his favorite worship song was. Without hesitation, he said, “10,000 Reasons.” Another divine confirmation.

The Echoes Continued

Even after we returned home, the echoes of God’s affirmation didn’t stop.

Four weeks later, just before our team shared our trip experience with the church, the worship leader once again closed the service with 10,000 Reasons. He still had no idea of the song’s significance to us. Six months later, on the way to a team prayer gathering for the country we had visited, the song came on the radio just minutes before I arrived. The Spirit’s confirmation continued—so personal, so precise.

And three years later? God used that same song to confirm that I was supposed to return to Asia. (Click here to read that story!)

This wasn’t just a worship song—it became a prophetic anthem. A lifeline. A source of strength, unity, and joy.

Reflection

Psalm 103 opens with these words:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”

That’s my heart’s desire every single day—to bless His holy name.

God is not distant. He’s deeply involved in the details of our lives. He speaks through songs, Scripture, people, prayer—and yes, even a mission trip playlist. He not only guides the big picture; He confirms His leading in tender, unmistakable moments like these.

So when the Holy Spirit nudges you—even through something as simple as a song—pause. Pay attention. He’s speaking.

Application

Has God ever used a song to speak directly to your heart?

Have you taken time to recognize His gentle confirmations—even the quiet ones?

The same God who knows the number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:7) knows your favorite worship song. He knows when it plays. He knows how to affirm your obedience, your calling, your prayers—even through the melody of a tune He placed on your path.

Let Psalm 103 be more than lyrics today. Let it be your prayer and your declaration:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”

Prayer

Father, thank You for being so personal. Thank You for speaking through songs, Scripture, people, and moments that only You could orchestrate. Help me listen closely and follow faithfully—whether You speak in a whisper or a melody. Use me to bless Your name. And may my soul never forget all You’ve done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

2 Corinthians 5:21

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (ESV)
